When a Fire Damage Claim Uncovers Extensive Smoke Damage: Navigating Coverage and Settlement
Fire damage primarily occurs through direct contact with flames, which can burn or melt objects. Smoke damage, on the other hand, is caused by smoke particles that can discolour surfaces, leave behind residues, and lead to corrosion over time.
If a property has experienced a fire, it may be found afterwards that most of the damage was due to smoke effects. In such cases, the insurer may need the assistance of an adjuster to assess how this aspect of the policy coverage should be addressed with the claimant.
How can a Loss Assessing Service help?
An insurer collaborated with Claims Equilibrium Club (CEC) adjusters to settle a complex claim and ensure the policy terms met the claimant's needs effectively. Initially, the insurer’s adjuster estimated the loss at around £30,000, with liability accepted. However, after discussions, the final settlement reached £100,000, largely due to the CEC adjuster’s expertise in negotiating fair and comprehensive coverage for the claimant.
In one key area, CEC adjusters addressed the property’s carpet condition. Although the carpets were initially cleaned, they did not fully return to their original state. The adjuster successfully advocated for full carpet replacement, including upper levels, where differences in pile and colour would otherwise create inconsistency. Re-decoration was similarly negotiated to include wallpaper replacement, even extending to undamaged areas upstairs to ensure a consistent appearance throughout the home.
Flexible Solutions
The insured was also entitled to alternative accommodation during the repairs, which would have added substantial cost. However, given their demanding work schedule involving frequent travel, the insured preferred to remain in the property. CEC’s adjuster facilitated a compromise, agreeing to a cash settlement (with no reduction to the claim value) so the insured could complete the work at a more convenient time. This approach not only met the insured’s needs but also offered an efficient resolution for both parties.
